APEL: Accreditation of Prior Experiential Learning
Accreditation of Prior Experiential Learning (APEL) is a system for obtaining all or part of a diploma or professional qualification by acknowledging skills acquired through experience.
The Executive Master's Diploma in Global Management, the Specialised Masters in Digital Management and the Manager of Distribution and Automotive Services BADGE can all be earned through APEL.
The steps in the APEL process
STEP 1: Interview prior to the start of the APEL procedure
The aim of the initial step in the procedure is to compare the applicant’s competencies with ESSCA’s professional competency framework. This makes it possible to assess the degree of convergence between the applicant’s competencies and those required.
STEP 2: Submission of the eligibility application
Once completed, the eligibility handbook provided by ESSCA verifies that the applicant meets the criteria for the Accreditation of Prior Experiential Learning (APEL) process.
STEP 3: Examination of the eligibility application by ESSCA

STEP 5: Review of financing options by the applicant
The applicant considers financing options
STEP 6: Drafting the portfolio of evidence
The applicant prepares a portfolio of evidence in which they describe their skills in direct relation to the qualification sought.
Applicants are able to benefit from 24 to 30 hours of one-to-one support to help them write their portfolio and prepare for their oral defence.
STEP 7: Oral defence
The APEL applicant presents their portfolio orally to the ESSCA APEL Jury. The jury fully or partially validates the APEL.
- Target audience: The APEL is open to anyone with at least 1 year’s cumulative professional or non-professional experience, acquired in the course of professional, salaried or self-employed activities (craftsman, self-employed or voluntary work) relevant to the qualification in question.
